Robots That Make Things

This recently showed up tagged MakerBot on Flickr. It’s white! If you’ve got more info about this machine, like it’s number or location or any other details, drop a note in the comments!

Zaggo is the proud owner of MakerBot 127 and he produced this awesome documentary about making a lamp clamp for his kitchen lamp! Wow, awesome video!

There’s a MakerBot purring away over at Noisebridge! Looks great!

We got word through Dave Menninger’s blog that the MakerBot over at Hive 13 is alive and kicking! You’ll notice that the letters are mirrored in the above photo. In ReplicatorG you can flip that in the settings or you can manually flip the stepper motor cable and plug it in backwards and that’ll work too. You’ll also notice that they are using painter’s tape which seems to be working pretty well for them!

Last night, after the Hive13 meeting Craig presented a quick tutorial on the basics of Blender and showed us how to make simple objects. This was incredibly useful because it got a number of us over that initial hump of not knowing anything at all about Blender. Blender can be tricky to understand, but I definitely felt like I was ready to start making useful models after tonight’s short lesson.

Nice work! Check out the Hive13 MakerBot wiki page of their progress. Very impressive!

MakerBot on a Bike!

Aug 14, 2009

Riding with a MakerBot on the handlebars!

This morning I had to go pick up my MakerBot from NYCResistor and bring it over to the BotCave for our Office Hours event tonight. I threw it on the handlebars and rode over.

Don’t try this at home. Even though this worked for me, upon arriving at my destination, I realized that if I had one emergency stop, the machine could have gone over the handlebars into oncoming traffic and even though I biked slow, it hampered my steering. What I really need to transport my MakerBot safely is a rack on the back, but modified for MakerBots. Hmm, maybe I can modify the bike mounts (1, 2)that have been showing up on Thingiverse!

Batch 6 is On Sale!

Jul 27, 2009

With every batch, we increase our batch size with the idea that we’ll sell a good chunk of the batch and then have some left over to have in stock. This has never happened because we always sell out before the end of the month!

We’re stepping it up again. Batch 5 (sold out) is planned to ship out on August 10th and Batch 6 will is planned to ship on September 3rd. So if you’ve been waiting to get a MakerBot Cupcake CNC, now is the time to order to get yours shipped to you in September.

There are a few options for making your own MakerBot Cupcake CNC. You can buy the Basic kit or the Deluxe kit. If you’ve got a power supply and the tools, you’ll want the Basic kit and just go over the list and order the things you don’t have already. If you want to set yourself up with a MakerBot tool kit, you’ll want to get the Deluxe kit kit.

The biggest upgrade ever arrived with Batch 5 and continues with Batch 6. All the electronics come pre-assembled!

Beautiful photography credit to Wizard23 who customized his machine to look like a giraffe!

Adam Cecchetti has made an awesome machine! I really like the green accents! What case mods are you making for your MakerBot or what mods do you have planned? Drop a note in the comments!

Obijuan has used his MakerBot to create the most insanely cool robotic catipillars called REPY-1 Modules. You can find the REPY-1 design on Thingiverse! Super bonus points for adding star wars references to this project!

Here’s another video featuring penguins riding a much longer REPY-1!

The gang over at Willoughby and Baltic are rocking a really sweet looking MakerBot! Check out the flickr photo set. They’ve also set up their own wiki page which is awesome!
